For Los Angeles producer Flying Lotus, real name Steven Ellison, it’s always best to expect the unexpected.
The grand-nephew of pianist Alice Coltrane, Ellison has turned out album after album of jazzy, brain-wrinkling dance music over the past decade. Recently, Ellison has gone even further afield, debuting rapper alter-ego Captain Murphy and releasing body horror movie “Kuso” earlier this year, a film The Verge called “the most disgusting movie ever made.”
For Ellison’s latest trick, he’s setting his warped vision on the live show. On Nov. 17, Ellison will bring what he’s calling Flying Lotus 3D, an immersive live DJ set, to Denver’s 2,200-person Exdo Event Center, better known as the building that houses Tracks.
Tickets to the show are $25.75-$42 and go on sale Aug. 25 at noon via axs.com.
Flying Lotus 3D has existed in some form since 2014, when the producer debuted in an opening slot for Thundercat in New York. He revamped the show this year for his set at L.A.’s FYF Fest last month. If it’s anything like that, Denver’s version will combine live, projected visuals that interface with 3D glasses that are handed out to fans before the show. The result in the video below is a bit like being plopped inside a kaleidoscope and hurtled into the mouth of a volcano. Fun!
