Sunday morning drivers will be greeted with an unusual sight: a 150-ton art studio on wheels, rolling down East 13th Avenue in Capitol Hill.
The Kirkland Museum will be moving Vance Kirkland’s studio from its current location on Pearl Street to 1201 Bannock St., the museum’s new site eight blocks west. A technician will pilot the building using six sets of remote controlled wheels which will be attached to a platform under the studio.
The move will start at 8 a.m., according to a release, and could continue for about eight hours. The 26-foot-tall building will move from its current location on Pearl Street to East 13th Avenue, where it will turn right and travel eight blocks to Broadway. The studio will then make a right on 11th Avenue and will move to Bannock Street where it will make another right, coming to a halt at the new address.
The streets along the route will be closed from midnight on Saturday until the late afternoon on Sunday. Pearl Street between 13th Avenue and 14th Avenue will be closed beginning Friday and will remain closed until Sunday. Bannock Street between 12th Avenue and 13th Avenue will be closed from Sunday until Tuesday. Public viewing areas will be located along the route on Broadway, 11th Avenue, 13th Avenue and Bannock Street. The schedule is permitted to change due to inclement weather. Updates will be posted here.
