There’s something about not being able to have something that makes us want it more. That’s probably why the Prohibition era was one of the most exciting times for cocktails, with underground speakeasies mixing up now-iconic drinks like the gin rickey, old fashioned and sidecar.

Fast forward to 2017, when alcohol — and other intoxicating substances — are readily available. In an overabundant current culture of eats and drinks, how can we recapture the glamour and stealth of that bygone time? Why, by copying it of course!

The new Millers & Rossi Art Gallery and Speakeasy, opening April 14, will try to bring back that 1920s feel, but with a side of contemporary art. Or rather, contemporary art with a side of 1920s speakeasy.

“It was originally supposed to be just an art gallery in the front,” co-owner Rafael Depaz told us. “But there was all the room in the back. (The speakeasy concept) just evolved.”

The gallery portion is bright and filled with photos, paintings and sculptures by local artists, but the speakeasy space is darker and more intimate. Besides a list of fresh takes on classic cocktails — the smoked old fashioned is sure to be popular, thanks to the awesome visual of smoked-to-order glasses — Millers & Rossi will serve small plates once the kitchen is up and running in May.

For now, M&R is looking into feeding hungry guests with food from Mondo Market or Moontime Crepes, because not having its tapas-style menu available now will probably make us want it more, which we’re sure was their plan from the get-go.
